Valencia celebrates arrival of spring with fireworks

The Spanish city of Valencia on Sunday celebrated the arrival of spring with a colourful carnival.

Puppet or doll-like figures – named “Ninots” – populate the streets before biting the dust in a feast of flames as part of the “Fallas” festival.

The festival, which is linked to the Roman Catholic church and is held in commemoration of the patron saint of Valencia, Saint Joseph, ends with a carnival of bonfires and fireworks every year on March 19.
